Last Tuesday I had the fun opportunity to make a drive to downtown McKinney, Texas!
Whenever I want a fun day trip, this is the first place that comes to mind. When you visit the downtown, you cannot help but fall in love with it’s rich history found in the buildings. Not only that, but they have an extensive list of unique and darling boutiques, stores and restaurants.
I just love this town, because I feel welcomed with their warm smiles, don’t mind spending my afternoon wandering around the unique stores and grabbing a yummy bite to eat. The options are endless when it comes to food..whatever you are in the mood for, they have it!
But there is one restaurant that stood out to me: I made a trip just for it!
HUGS cafe is not only delicious, but has such an inspiring mission behind it.
Founded by Ruth Thompson, HUGS is completely non-profit and ran primarily by adults with special needs.
While listening to their story, this is very evident. HUGS focuses on providing food service training, and employment to adults with special needs.
Not only this, but HUGS allows the community to come in and volunteer with the teammates. HUGS trains their teammates and gives them the opportunity for their Food Handlers Certification. Which I absolutely love this concept! By doing so, it allows the individual the opportunity to gain a skill, be certified, and then go out and find a job at another establishment. Overall this concept prepares the individual with success in the future.
Provided below is their About Us page where you can read more in detail about how the idea was envisioned and also an opportunity to read about the teammates!
What makes this even better is when you take a trip here yourself, you get to meet the teammates and order off of their vast menu.
HUGS offers various sandwiches, salads, soups, delicious sides..and my favorite, dessert!
Here are three teammates that I had the opportunity of meeting while visiting HUGS! This picture brings me so much joy because it allows me to remember the sweet conversations we had and the hugs that were given!!
When I choose to spend my money for lunch, I choose a place that offers great atmosphere, friendly faces and great food.
HUGS provides more than that, and also invests in promoting the special needs community. This is something I find priceless in an establishment!
When you hear that mission is the foundation of a company, you innately trust them and the services they will provide for you.
Yummy food + hugs from the sweetest teammates, and you’re asking for a lunch experience you will want to have over and over again!
